Commissioner Gist to visit Portsmouth Thursday

Rhode Island's Commissioner of Education will hold an open meeting this Thursday, January 27th at Portsmouth Middle School. The meeting is in the Little Theater at 6:30. The Commissioner has pledged to visit each Rhode Island School District this year.

Items which could be discussed:

Rhode Island proposed three tier diploma system: The three tier diploma comes after a requirement in 2012 that all Seniors be proficient on the New England Common Assessment (NECAP) tests prior to graduation. The three tier diploma proposal would give a student who fails a NECAP test yet has fulfilled and passed their high school criteria a diploma. It then defines a Regents diploma for a student passing the NECAP and fulfilling their high school requirements. And, an Honors diploma for those scoring among the highest in the State and fulfilling high school requirements. Many school administrators are not in favor of the change, as are many urban leaders.
